Whether you’re on a diet or just trying to keep your current physique, traveling can take its toll. From the moment you start traveling especially through airports, you will be barraged with unhealthy foods. We all know it’s hard to eat well while traveling through airports. They offer lots of fast food, most of which isn’t nutritionally great. If you aren’t conscientious, your exercise routine may also suffer. It may not be easy to eat well and exercise, but with some dedication you can do it.
- Pack some simple snacks before you leave your house. Include almonds, walnuts, prunes, apples, oranges, granola bars. Maybe some string cheese. Use portion size baggies for convenience and to help prevent over indulging.
- If you need some breakfast at the airport, try the new McDonald’s oatmeal w/fruit. When It’s sure to be lower in calories than the double mocha latte with a giant muffin. When a company offers healthier food alternatives, people will make good choices
- If you are taking a long flight, where you will be provided a real meal by the airline, order vegetarian in advance.
- Be sure to eat smaller meals. Eating “on the road,” usually means greater indulgence in fatty, high cholesterol and saltier foods. Smaller portions equate to less of the ‘bad’ stuff.
- Ask for a room where you can walk up and down a few flights of stairs instead of always taking the elevator.
- When you arrive at your hotel, check out the fitness center. Most hotels have one, some better than others. Weather permitting outdoor exercising in the fresh air, whether hiking, biking, playing a sport, biking, tennis, long fast walks, can revitalize you–especially if you live in a cold dreary climate. Get out and feel the sunshine on your face. It will also add lots of healthy Vitamin D.
- Eat more fish, salads, fruits and vegetables.
Pay attention to what you are eating at every meal. Your best gauge is whether your clothes continue to fit and feel comfortable throughout your trip. Too often people think because they are eating out in restaurants, they have “carte blanche” to “stuff their faces.” There is always a payback for that way of thinking.
What I know for sure, is that when you eat healthy foods and get regular exercise you will start to see your physique change. If you like what you see, you will want to continue seeing positive changes. When you look and feel better, you won’t want to return to your old habits. You will notice the difference, people who know will notice too. You will stand taller, be prouder and realize, you do have control over how you look and feel. That, of course, is a great feeling…at home or on the road.
